However, they finished the season in seventh place, which meant that the club qualified for the UEFA Europa league. This was Fulham's second entry to a UEFA competition.

The club saw more success in 2009-10. Again, Fulham reached the quarter finals in the FA Cup and reached a 12^th place finish in the Premier League. Fulham also pushed all the way to the Europa League final against Atletico Madrid. The game was a 1:1 draw and went into overtime, where Atletico prevailed. For the feat of taking the club to a European cup final, Fulham manager Roy Hodgson was voted LMA Manager of the year.
