During its history, the club has been known by a number of nicknames, the most common of which are “Los Colchoneros” – “the Mattress Makers” and “Los Indios,” given to them after the team signed several South American players.
The club’s first grounds were Ronda de Vallecasm, but in 1966 Atletico Madrid moved to its current home stadium, the Vicente Calderón Stadium, which has a capacity of 55,000. The stadium was originally called Estadio Manzanares, but was later renamed in honor of Vicente Calderón, Atletico’s famed club president.
Original club colors were white and blue, but Atletico Madrid soon changed to their signature red and white striped tops and blue shorts, mainly to avoid being confused with another La Liga team wearing similar colors.
The club’s crest is in a shape of diagonally-cut coat of arms, half of which depicts a bear reaching for a strawberry tree – a symbol which dates back to the 13th century and was taken from the Madrid Coat of Arms; and half made of red and whitestripes, representing the team’s jerseys
